Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance
2024, Hong Kong
Tai Hang was bustling with excitement as the much-anticipated Fire Dragon Dance began at 8 pm. A grand fire dragon adorned with incense sticks, accompanied by a smaller LED-lit dragon, weaved through the streets, captivating the crowd with their synchronized movements.
The event drew large crowds of locals and visitors who gathered to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival and welcome the fire dragon. The Fire Dragon Dance, a tradition dating back to 1880, originated as a ritual to ward off plagues. This year, approximately 300 performers brought the 67-meter-long incense-laden dragon to life. The dragon's head, divided into 31 sections, was crafted using herbal grass.
Adding a modern twist, a 20-meter-long LED dragon, operated by around 100 children, joined the festivities. The Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance will continue from Monday (16th) to Wednesday (18th), starting at 7.30 pm each night.
